Enjoy making custom garments easily and successfully from simple to follow step-by-step instructions.
"Don - I've been reading your pattern making book and I'm shocked at how easy pattern making is. Yours is not the first pattern drafting book I've read - anyone who is serious about garment sewing at least toys with the idea of making their own patterns. However, the others bore me or lose me. Yours is so elegantly simple."
"McCunn's book dispels the mysteries of pattern drafting, an area which was once the province of the couturier. A do-it-yourself text in which lessons build upon one another, this book provides detailed guides to creating patterns." -- Library Journal
This new eBook How to Make Bikinis and Bandeaus by Don McCunn shows how to create patterns for garments based on Bikini and Bandeau shapes from swimsuits to wedding dresses as well as underwear, tops, dress, and gowns. It includes instructions for making fitted bottoms that can be used either for swimsuits or panties.
This eBook An Introduction to Pattern Design by Don McCunn will take you through the basic techniques of pattern design quickly and easily even if you have no previous sewing experience.
I have started an online school Patternmaking Classes to cover a variety of topics. To see how these online classes work, go to the Sandbox Classroom. You do not need to be registered to visit this classroom. Use the Guest Login feature.
This new eBook How to Make Custom-Fit Bras by Don McCunn introduces the concept of using body sculpting and three-dimensional pattern making to create bras that fit.
I have started a Yahoo! Group, How-to-Make-Sewing-Patterns, for the discussion of hand drafting custom patterns for clothes. You may use the form below to join the group. Please note in this group we do not discuss pattern drafting software or altering commercial patterns.
Other sewing and pattern related Yahoo Groups I recommend are FitSnob, CreativeMachine, and Sewing_Lingerie, and SewingRoom.
In 2005 I started developing Patterns for Fashion Dolls. I find Fashion Dolls a great way to explore pattern variations. I have included some Sloper Patterns for my girls Tyler, Alex, and Madra. These patterns cover the steps described in the first 75 pages of my book. I hope you will take a look.
One of the projects of the Craft Gym where I teach is to conduct a community crafting event once a quarter to make Chemo Caps. These caps are then donated to the cancer patients currently undergoing chemotherapy at UCSF's Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Red Hat Chemo Cap - My first donation was a Red Hat Chemo Cap. If you know someone undergoing chemotherapy and would like to make a hat like this, I have included free patterns and instructions for how to make this hat at Red Hat Chemo Cap. |
| Polar Fleece Chemo Caps - I also have free patterns for simplier Chemo Caps made from polar fleece. There are three different designs including one for children. The instructions and patterns for these caps can be downloaded at Chemo Caps. | ![]() |
On February 18, 2006 I had the priviledge of being the guest author on a chat with the Yahoo Group FitSnobs. Sandy Norton had her group submit questions and pictures of garments for critiquing prior to the chat. So I was able to discuss a variety of topics including using fashion dolls for design prototypes, fitting skirts, pants, bodices, and sleeves and pattern drafting for bras. I enjoyed having the experience of a "live" chat with almost 100 people from England to Australia and points in between. For more information and a PDF transcript of the chat you can download, go to Fitsnob Chat.
